Top Marks for Grennan College student
Grennan College student, Rioch Walsh , achieved the highest marks in Ireland in Construction Studies in the Leaving Certificate 2010. To mark the occasion his success will be acknowledged by the Techno Teachers Association of Ireland at an Awards Ceremony to be held in Galway on March 5th.
For the project element of his Construction Studies examination Rioch chose to produce a rocking horse, made of laminated birch. As his Construction Studies teacher, Mr John O Brien, explained, it involved many hours of painstaking work of measuring, cutting, sanding, assembling, varnishing, and finishing to produce the end product. Rioch looked upon it all as a labour of love.
The project, of course, is only one element of the Construction Studies examination. Students also undergo a practical examination in May, with a written theory paper to be sat in June. His principal at Grennan College, Mr Willie Norton, in congratulating Rioch said that “this is indeed a remarkable feat and truly deserved. Rioch was our Student of the Year in 2010 and this award is a reflection of of his merits, his commitment and his dedication. We are all extremely proud of his achievement and we wish him every success in the future.”
