Transition Year Class at Grennan College applied to do a Radio Broadcasting Workshop with RTE 2FM’s Executive Producer Maggie Stapleton in September (07).
We were one of thirty schools chosen to take part in the Radio Workshop out of the 350 schools that applied.
Having done the Workshop we were told that if we made a Programme Proposal Document the Producer and her team would consider us as being contenders for a one-hour Radio Show on 2FM in April. The slot is called Transition Year Radio and we at Grennan College were delighted to get notification early in January 08 that our efforts to get a Radio Show had been successful.
Our show was recorded in the week 21st – 25th April and the 2FM’s Roadcaster arrived in Grennan College on Thursday 24th April. Zoe Walsh was out presenter, our Producer was Hannah Bailey and Production Co-ordinator was AnnMarie Malone. We interviewed many local stars and Artistes, among them Ms Angela Downey our Geography teacher and famous Camogie legend, Brian Cody Senior hurling manager, Mike Haley and Gary Comerford of Camphill’s Watergarden. We also interviewed the Course Directors of the two renowned courses that are part of Grennan College’s PLC line up – Alexandra Meldrum Grennan Mill Craft School and Bridgette McCarthy Grennan Equestrian Centre.
Local musicians and bands were not forgotten in our show. Ciaran McCarthy and Ken Walsh gave us interesting insights into the Lives of Up and Coming Young Bands “Chemical Addiction” and Thomastown Band “Southern Discomfort”. Their demo songs – Dark Light and Brian Jones are featured on the one hour show along with discs chosen by our TYs – like “Heartbreaker “ by Will.I.AM and “Always where I need to be” by the Kooks.
This experience was very exciting and valuable to Grennan Colleges Transition Year Group.
Students saw at first hand how to plan, research, produce and present a Radio Programme.
